Music Madness // Green Light Theory

Hey guys.

Even though I have interviewed a band before this is the first of my Music Madness Promotion series and I'm so glad that it is the band Green Light Theory.

Green Light Theory (GLT) is an alternative rock band that was formed in January 2013. It was originally made up of 2 brothers Kyle and Corey Rutchland and then friend Scott Waldman and Drew Holliday joined shortly after. Apart from Kyle and Corey they met in startbucks where Kyle and Drew worked and found out they all had a passion for music so thats how Green Light Theory began. They originate from Hawaii, California and New York but all individually moved to LA to try and get into the music industry.

Corey Rutchland - Lead Vocals/ Rhythm Guitarist
Drew Holliday - Drums and Percussion
Kyle Rutchland - Bass and Vocals
Scott Waldman - Lead Guitarist and Vocals

Im not just saying this because Im promoting the band but I honestly do love their music so much. My favorite song of theirs is Our Last Day. The song is so well put together and the instruments compliment each other amazingly and its just an overall feel good song. I also love their lyrics because they are the type of songs you listen to and you go "oh my god ive felt like that before" or "thats happened to me before" which is usually hard to do as a musician but they have nail it in every song. I've been watching some of their vlogs as well and they all seem like they have such a fun time performing and just love being in each others company.

I've been talking with Kyle recently and here is the interview we did earlier today...

Q: How old where you when you first started getting into music and knew you wanted to do it as a career?

A: I was 18, senior in high school

Q: What advice would you give to someone who loves signing but is very shy?

A: Baby steps, sing in front of your closest friend, have them give some constructive criticism. Then sing in front of your family. Just build the audience up from there. You can't be shy if you want to be a performer.

Q :Do you ever plan you come to Europe to go some gigs?

A: I can't wait for the day that GLT books a euro tour. We have so many awesome fans in Ireland, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, and some other countries. So we're really exited to go play for them out there. Hopefully within the next couple years

Q: What's been the best performance you have ever done?

A: So my personal favorite show that we've played was being direct support for Hawthorne Heights' 10 year anniversary show in NYC. The crowd was awesome, most people there never heard of us but they were moshing to our songs and singing and going nuts. It was an amazing show

Q: Do  you have any crazy fan stories?

A: No crazy fan stories... yet

Q: Do you tend to write your own songs if so do you find inspiration from personal situations?

A: We write all of our own songs. Sometimes Corey and I will come up with song ideas, or Corey and Scott will write a song together, or drew will bring some lyrics or song ideas to the table. We build off of each other. I would honestly say most of our song ideas are derived off of others' experiences or scenarios that we make up. We like to tell stories. However we wrote a new song called "Breaking Hearts Like Glass" that derived from my recent relationship experiences and how they keep ending the same way.

Q: Did you and the rest of the boys in the band gel instantly or was there any artistic differences?

A: Most the time our ideas flow really well together, but there's times where there might be a guitar lead, bass line, drum fill, or something that someone doesn't like so we'll spend time working on it til it's exactly what everyone likes

Q: Would you ever think of making merchandise if you haven't got some already?

A: We have shirts, wristbands, CDs and stickers. Working on some new cool stuff like phone cases smile emoticon

(Link will be below)

Q: . Everyone knows the music industry is hard to get into so what keeps you motivated to carry on?

A: That's so true. And i think what keeps us going is when we get a message from a fan that simply says, "your music helped me get through a really hard time, thank you so much, can't wait to see a show", and it leaves us feeling like we've made a difference and that we need to keep going.

Q: Are there any specific artists that inspired you when you were growing up?

A: Um we all have different inspirations. Corey was inspired a lot by the band Cartel as well as the Maine and other pop rock bands. Scott has had many influences from 90's alt rock to 2000's emo/pop punk. Drew is a big metal head and loves progressive rock. And I'm heavily influenced by emo and post hardcore bands. Scott and i probably have the most similar taste in music, we love going to the same shows together and trading music.

Q: Whats next for GLT?

A: And we have a few things coming up actually, we're recording an acoustic EP this week, we're playing a headlining show in New York City in July. And we'll be recording a new song while we're there with a producer named Rob Freeman from a band called hidden in plain view. We can't wait to release our new material.

I just wanted to say thank you to Kyle for taking time out of his day to do the interview and he is honestly such a  lovely guy. Im going to leave all their links below and I highly recommend you go check them out, give them a follow and go and subscribe because they are such a talent group and I wish them all the luck in the world. Also check out their merch because their tops are awesome and ill defiantly be getting my hands on one and also one of their wristband. Even though their EP is on YouTube I personally would go grab a hardback CD because common everyone knows its so much better actually having the CD.  Who knows maybe in the future ill try and do a skype call with the boys so I have an interview for my channel with all of them.... You never know.

I'll be talking about the band more on my channel so keep your eyes open for a video in the new few days. I hope you all liked his and I know I said it before but please check them out they are honestly favorite band at the moment.
